THE NORTH SHORE
In 1943, the US Government, Swain County, the TVA and the state of North Carolina signed an agreement to build a road along the North Shore of Fontana Lake.
Earlier, many families had given up their lands for the creation of the lake in order to create power for the War Effort (WWII).
With 44,000 acres NOT used for Lake Fontana, but having access cut off by the flooding of Highway 288, residents were once again forced from their land, as the TVA donated that area to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.
With over 1000 grave sites still inside the National Park, over 60 years later, former residents are still fighting for the signatories of the Agreement to uphold their end of the bargain.
